Description of location :
Traces of Uuldiin Khuree are found on the shoreline of Khovd River on land of Shurag brigade, Erdeneburen sum, Khovd provice. The west of the Uuldiin Khuree is the river Khovd, passed the river - on the western ridge of Khan Khukhii is an extension of Tsambagarav and Tarvagatain mountain range. The shoreline where the khuree is located has Khovd river gadargana and sandy soil. The local seniors mention that when the khuree was first established, the monks selected a wrong spot inside a junction of three landmarks “Shura river water, Shar Buurug’s sand and Khukh Khutul’s road”. The river Shura comes from the embouchure of Tarvagatai Gorge which is an extension of the Altai mountain range on the west side of the Khovd River. When there is a flood, the Shura river streams into the Khovd river and when Khovd River’s water level is up, the Khuree which is on the shoreline of the Khovd River gets flooded. Also, the Khovd River shore is very sandy, creating. muddy soil near the Khuree. The river Khovd streams about 5 – 6 km. east of the Khuree. Erdeneburen sum is located 15 km. northwest of the Khuree. There are no homesteads or establishments around this area. In ancient times, the shoreline area of the Khovd River used to be called Khorchin’s Shoreline based on the fact that a town named Khorchin existed in this area, the previous settlement spot prior to the building of Uuldii Khuree. The Uuldii Khuree was built in an area that is on the upper side of the Khorchin town’s bridge. Currently there is no settlement or landmark found with the name Khorchin. Only some locals call it Khorchin’s Shoreline when referring to the area where the Uuldiin Khuree was built.

Status of site at time of survey :
Uuld’s Gandanpuntsaglin monastery (also known as Khuree) traces are almost diminished. In the feather-grass river shoreline area is a 35 – 40 m size previous khuree establishment base where it has traces of a building and a few walls. Although the site attracts human and livestock traffics and had experienced sand movement, on the site are remnant base of watchtower made from mud, a cone shaped hardened dirt mount, and in some places almost unnoticeable traces of muddy bricks from the watchtower, stones from the khuree structures, broken wood pieces and broken pieces of an iron-cast cauldron still remain. The entry area of the khuree’s watchtower is clearly noticeable. This area does not have any mud or landslides. There is a car path which passed through the site area, but it did not run over any of the remaining structures. The locals are well aware of the fact that the Khuree was built with a name “Evderkhii = Broken” and it eventually reached the condition that it was called after. Therefore locals do not come close to the khuree base. 10 m southwest of the base is an apparent trace of 1 m in diameter well which was probably built many years ago. Inside the well are stones that are embedded into its wall. The local seniors say that the well was functioning during the Khuree was open. The well has not been used for many years and the well has a bottom that resembles a bog and its water is not at its clearest.

1. The monastic city is known by three different names: Uuldiin Khuree, Gandanpuntsaglin Khuree and Gandanpuntsaglin Monastery. The Uuldii Khuree is located on the shoreline of Khovd River, in land of Shurag brigade, Erdeburen sum of Khovd province. Currently the site referred as “Evderkhii” based on its current condition. This name also refers to the site where the previous monastic city was built. Everyone knows the site when it is referred with name “Evderkhii”, the name was utilized by the locals since 1950. 2. It has been noted that the Uuldiin Khuree of Erdeneburen sum (also known as Erdeneburengiin Khuree, Gandanpuntsaglin) is located on the shoreline of Khovd River. Another recorded name in the history is Dambii Uuldii Khuree. 10. The site was established after Uulds migrated on the shoreline of Khovd River and onto the slope of Tsambagarav mountain. This event took place when the two centuries XVII - XVIII were changing. 11. The Khuree was disbanded around 1937 and 1938, after the disbandment the building materials were recycled in the construction of MAAMC building whose intention was to mow in the land of the 6th brigade in Buyant sum. In the mid 1960’s, the mud buildings were intact and was well looked after by guards who would also kindle the offering candles. 13. The Uuldiin Khuree was once home to over 100 monks.
