Description of location :
The Taijiin khuree site is located 10Km to west of the Bulgan river on the southern side of the Chonot mountain range. Chonot mountain has been worshiped since ancient times and there is a sacred ‘ovoo’ on it. There are no towns near the site. The right bank of the Bulgan river belongs to the Taijiin torguud people. Currently the monastery site is called Khureenii Gazar. In Richen’s map it says Torguud Vangiin Khuree is located in the area called Chonot. But this is inaccurate as Taijiin khuree is on the site we located. But Torguud Vangiin khuree was once temporarily located in the area called Namarzan, through which the Bulgan river also runs.

Status of site at time of survey :
Taijiin khuree was the biggest and principal of all the torguud and khoshuud monasteries. It takes a journey of four hours through mud and marsh to travel the 47Km along the river Bulgan to reach the site, which is located on the south side of the Chonot mountain range. Mantra words outlined in white stones, are clearly visible some distance from the site. They serve as a landmark to locate the site. Local monks wrote the words in the 1920-1930s. There are two small mounds in the middle of the site on one of which a stand has been built for calling the monks to gather for chanting. The stand is round. It is 1.5M high and 1.6-1.7M in diameter and made of bricks. The site can be divided into 3 parts: the temples, the monks’ residence area and the sacred shrines. The outlines of the base of the temple buildings and the outlines of the monks’ ‘gers’ and the outlines of the Maitreya ceremony circle are all clearly visible. All were built with bricks. Some other wooden and rock parts of the buildings base remain on site. There are two sacred ovoos on the west and the north side of the site. On one of the ovoos there were some broken bits of clay vases with Indian Lanca inscriptions on them. Our guide said that Taijiin khuree seal of 1,000 buddhas was like this.

Notes :
1. The Torguuds dwelling around the Bulgan river divide into 3 main groups Vangiinkhsn, Beiliinkhen, Taijiinkhan. There are 2 assumptions why the name Taijiinkhan was used for the monastery: One is that in 1910’s a group of Torguuds from Shinjian moved in with a ‘taigan” (circumcised); the second is that a group of Torguuds separated from their khoshuu due to bad relations between brothers, who were ruling the khoshuu. In professor Rinchen’s map this monastery is named ‘Torguud taijiin khuree – Shadavpedjeiling’ (Bulgan river).
