Description of location :
The Saruuliin Khuree temple was located at the entrance of a sloping valley at the upper east of a small lake called Altan Nuur which is surrounded by a slope of high mountain Sair at its back. Buraatiin passage is an extension of the Mongol Altain mountain range and it is found north of the Sair mountain. About 10 km. northwest of the Saruuliin Khuree base is Tolbo sum of Bayan-Ulgii province. The Tolbo sum, which takes up 36 km., is at the upper east side of the Tolbo Nuur. Since the temple is located nearby Tolbo Nuur, the locals are accustomed to calling this temple Saruun Gunii Tolbo Khuree. It is not clear if any of the surrounding mountains is worshiped.

Status of site at time of survey :
Some of the building remains on the Saruuliin Khuree temple are still undamaged. An estimation of the total campsite can be measured because the bigger temple bases are visible, measuring 16 x 24 m. In 1985, the locals built a permanent homestead on the temple base. The settlement is commemorated by a big, umber-colored stone that reads: “A stone on the Tolbo Lake temple site, Uriankhain Saruul Gunii Khoshuu” which was set up by the delegates of the Altain Uriankhai Citizenry. There are traces of two Mongolian ger bases, foundation-like stones, stones from the buildings, a small temple base, the imprint of a fence, a base of a kitchen building and the temple’s well. Baydolda, originally a Kazakhstan citizen, mentions that the base southwest of the temple was dug up by those who claimed to use the area for worship. In point of fact, there are traces of an excavation of the well and nearby the well is the kitchen building. The story of the excavation is told by elderly Kazakhs. They also say that when they first came to the shoreline of the Tolbo Nuur, the Saruuliin Temple was an interesting site to explore.
On the 20th of June 1976, a memorial board was built in commemoration of the fact that a MAJTS class of the temple site was besieged for 42 days by the Baron Ungern von Sternberg army. Altai’s Uriankhais set up an owoo on the shoreline of Altan Lake which is at the north of the temple site. During the communist era, the temple buildings were demolished and on the reclaimed land the union’s milk producing farm was set up. In 1990, it was privatized and demolished completely. This building was set up on the right side of the temple site. All of these still remain on the reclaimed base.
